VARIATIONS ON THE BASIC STEP

Here are some variations on the basic Salsa step. However, the number of steps and weight transfer is still the same.

 

Opening Out, also known as the Fifth Position

The move starts with a open two hand hold.

Step

Description

1 Guy goes back on the left foot, lady back on the right foot. However, open out to the side you step back on, angling the foot in that direction and letting go of the hand on that side.
2 Keep your feet where they are but transfer your weight to the other foot
3 Replace the foot you went back on, putting your weight on it
4 Pause or, optionally, tap
5 Guy goes back on the right foot, lady back on the left foot. However, open out to the side you step back on, angling the foot in that direction and letting go of the hand on that side.
6 Keep your feet where they are but transfer your weight to the other foot
7 Replace the foot you went back on, putting your weight on it
8 Pause or, optionally, tap

 

Mambo

The move starts with a standard close hold.

Step

Description

1 Guy goes forward on the left foot, as the goes lady back on the right foot
2 Keep your feet where they are but transfer your weight to the other foot
3 Replace the foot you moved, putting your weight on it
4 Pause or, optionally, tap
5 Now it's the lady's turn to go forward on the left foot, and the guy goes back on the right foot
6 Keep your feet where they are but transfer your weight to the other foot
7 Replace the foot you moved, putting your weight on it
8 Pause or, optionally, tap

 

Rumba

The move starts with a standard close hold.

Step

Description

1 Guy steps out to the left hand side. Lady steps out to the same side. Put the weight on the foot you step out on, as normal.
2 Keep your feet where they are but transfer your weight to the other foot
3 Replace the foot you moved, putting your weight on it
4 Pause or, optionally, tap
5 Guy steps out to the right hand side. Lady steps out to the same side. Put the weight on the foot you step out on.
6 Keep your feet where they are but transfer your weight to the other foot
7 Replace the foot you moved, putting your weight on it
8 Pause or, optionally, tap
