GENERAL

The first half of the beginners class is always a look at the basic footwork. In the second half we do a different move or step each week; these are described below.

As with all our classes you can start any week. Don't forget there is no substitute for coming to a real life class! This moves list is intended as a memory jogger.

Key:
RH right hand
LH left hand
RF right foot
LF left foot
RHS right hand side
LHS left hand side
CW clockwise
ACW anticlockwise

Tips: Don't rush it, listen to the music, keep in time. If you're having trouble remembering the pause, you can replace it with a tap.

THE MOVES

WEEK 1 - COLUMBIAN TURN

1-2-3-4: In open hold, open out to the L.

5-6-7-8: Open out to the R but end with the guy's LH high (at head height) and guy's don't take girls hand with RH.

1-2-3-4: Turn the girl CW 360 with the LH. She steps back on RF on 1, round on LF, round on RF and use pause to tidy up with feet both level, can optionally tap. Guy just does a basic step on LF as girl goes round.

Opening Out, also known as the Fifth Position

The move starts with a open two hand hold.

Step

3 Replace the foot you went back on, putting your weight on it
4 Pause or, optionally, tap
5 Guy goes back on the right foot, lady back on the left foot. However, open out to the side you step back on, angling the foot in that direction and letting go of the hand on that side.

To switch from the close hold to the open hold you need to push away with the LH to open out on the Guy's left for the 1-2-3-4. One the 5-6-7-8 you can take your R arm away and open out to the right. Your are now in open hold.

To switch from open hold to close hold you wait until you have open out to the R and use the 6-7 to bring the R arm into position for the close hold.

WEEK 3 - MAMBO TURN

1-2-3-4: Signal the turn to the girl by bringing the LH down and back up in a inverted 'C' shape. The footwork is a basic step for the guy on the LF and basic step of the girl on the RF.

5-6-7-8: Turn the girl CW 360, immediately on the 5. The girl step forward on the LF on the 5 and keeps stepping round on the 6 7 and pauses on 8.

WEEK 4 - ELBOW TURN

The move starts from a right hand to right hand hold, as if shaking hands. Therefore, you need to use two opening outs to change right to right.

Your are now ready for the move:

1-2-3-4: On 1 guys step back on L, girls step back on R, guy can lower R slightly to mark this out. On 2 the guy 'throws' the girls hand he his holding with his R to the R, letting go. The causes the girl to turn ACW, about 270.

5-6-7-8: Guy catches the girl with his RH on the outside of her L elbow. On 5 guy steps back on RF, girl on LF. On 6 the guy leads the girl back round CW to face him again. Footwork for the guy is just a back step.

WEEK 5 - WRAP-IN (aka BARREL/BASKET)

The move starts from an open two handed hold, as used with the Opening Out step.

Step

Description

(The animation will take a little time to download)

1 Guy goes back on the left foot, lady back on the right foot. Guys cue the lady with your left hand slightly to the left, keeping it at waist height. A cue just means that you use the tension in both your arms to make the lady step back.
2 Guys pull with your left hand, brining it across your face, left to right,  to start turning  the lady anticlockwise and into your right hand side.  The lady should step forward with her right foot, beginning to turn anticlockwise. The footwork for the guys is just as a basic step.
3 Guys continue to pull the lady into his right hand side, so she goes side on with the guys left hand above her head. Ladies will need to back on the left foot. Should end up both facing forward. Guys right hand should be on or near the lady's right hip.
4 Pause or, optionally, tap. Guys can lower left hand in front of the lady.
5 Guy goes back on the right foot, lady back on the left foot.
6 Guys raise right hand to send the lady back where she came from, clockwise.  Lady steps forward on her left foot, beginning to turn clockwise. The guys footwork is just as for a basic step.
7 Guys continue to send the lady back to her original position. Ladies will need to go back with the right foot. Should end up both facing each other, two hands still holding.
8 Pause or, optionally, tap. You will now be back to the start, so you can repeat it.

WEEK 6 - THROW AWAY

1-2-3-4: From close hold position, guy does a mambo forward on his LF as he uses his LH to open the girl out on her RF.

5-6-7-8: Can either lead the girl forward on her LF and her mambo. Or both open out to guy's RHS.

WEEK 7 - GIRL's CUBAN TURN and RETURN

1-2-3-4: On 1 guys step back on L, girls step back on R. On 2 and 3 turn the girl 270 ACW with LH to girl's RH. Pause on 4. Note, on 1 can step to guy's LHS instead of stepping back. Guys can lead this by taking LH out to the L.

5-6-7-8: Use RH on your L shoulder to send her back 270 CW, under your LH. Pause on 8.

WEEK 8 - NECK LOCK

The move starts from a right hand to right hand hold, as if shaking hands. Therefore, you need to use two opening outs to change right to right.

Both do an opening out step again, guy's on the right foot, lady's on the left foot. However, so you come back to face the lady, place your right hand into the lady's right hand, letting go of the left.

Now ready for the Neck Lock:

1 Guy goes back on the left foot, lady back on the right foot. Cue the lady with your right hand keeping it just below shoulder height. A Cue just means that you use the tension in both your arms to make the lady step back. The guys foot work is just as for a basic step.

(The animation will take a little time to download)

2 Guys pull back with your right hand to start brining the lady into your right hand side. The lady should step forward with her right foot, beginning to turn anticlockwise.
3 Guys continue to pull the lady into his right hand side so she goes side on with the guys right arm across her shoulders. Ladies will need to back on the left foot. Should end up both facing forward.
4 Pause or, optionally, tap.
5 Stay where you are. Guy goes back on the right foot, lady back on the left foot. The guys footwork is just as for a basic step.
6 Guys now send the lady back where she came from, clockwise, by leading with the right of his upper body. Optionally, the guy can use his left hand lady's left shoulder to help make her turn back out. Lady steps forward on her left foot, beginning to turn clockwise.
7 Guys continue to send the lady back to her original position. Ladies will need to go forward with the right foot. Should end up both facing forward.
8 Pause or, optionally, tap.

After this we will go back to week 1
